Dear Beloveds,
Imagine, you're floating in the crystal blue ocean, waves gently bobbing you up and down. You can smell the cocoa butter sunscreen as you laze and enjoy. And then you hear it...da dun...da dun...dun dun dun dun DUN DUN! Aaaaahhhhhhh! It's so deeply embedded, the primal fear of sharks. They are deadly predators, solitary hunters bursting out of hiding to viciously attack any and all who dare to enter their waters. Or are they?
Like so many things in life, we think we know about sharks, but what we know is an amalgam of movies, urban legends (ocean legends?) and nightmares, with very little biology thrown in. The truth is much more complicated, which is true of many situations. We are all walking around with unexamined assumptions that can lead us astray and interfere with our growth.
This Sunday, we'll learn some lessons from sharks, including letting go of misunderstandings about ourselves and others. It might get choppy, but, "Breathe! It's Shark Week!"
Much love,
Rev. Lezli
